Notes about the JD this year

Clarno to Cottonwood - About 70 miles

June 20-25th

It is a high water year, expect flows to be around 5000 CFS. Makes for easy rowing and mediocre fishing. Also, be prepared for a survival type experience with the coolest dampest spring on record. Cool weather gear and rain gear is a must!

River is running at 9900 CFS, down from 30,000 a week ago.

Here is my first blog update for this year. There is good info on this page. I have made all of you authors so you should be able to post directly to the blog, give it a try, see how it works, and give me some feedback. There are some cool links on the right hand side of the screen, links to water levels, the BLM website for the river, snow pack info, etc, weather forecast, etc. Also those of you who might need it, Sierra Designs is having a great deal on gigantic drybags right now http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/4690,2579V_Seattle-Sports-H2O-Waterproof-Gear-Bag-Large.html  I have one of these. They are not the caddilac of drybags, except that they are large like a late 70s caddy, large enough to hold everything a person might want to bring and are $34.

Here are some notes from the meeting:
  • Sam is coordinating the satellite phone, this should be a communal expense, if no one objects.
  • Jan/Sam are coordinating meals
  •      o Everyone will be responsible for a dinner and then a breakfast the next day
  •      o Please let them know what meals you are planning
  •      o Sarah is allergic to dairy products, so if dairy is part of your meal, plan to add it last, so a dairy free portion of the meal can be set aside
  • The Fullers are coordinating the kitchen
  • I am coordinating shuttles – please send me your make, model, and color, and plate number.
  • The Thomses are finding us a campsite for the night before.
  • Wes, do you want to be the coffee coordinator. You don’t need to buy all the coffee, just make sure people bring enough raw materials and equipment to make coffee fro 14
  • Bryn will bring white gas stove and Brian to bring propane stove
  • Thomses to bring a propane grill.
  • Everyone was in favor of driving over the day before, so as to get a good night sleep followed by an early start for the put on day.
  • BYOB
  • BYOW – That’s water. Lets shoot for ten gallons or so per boat.
  • I think we should do communal expenses different this year, and here is why: With the shuttle, if we divide communal expenses by number of people and assign shares, one share per person, Sam would pay 26 to shuttle his car, but the Thomses would pay 128 to shuttle theirs, way more than the actual shuttle costs. I propose this year each party has one share. In this scenario, each party would pay about $62 for the shuttle (if you can’t follow the math, I figured 75/car with 5 cars – with 14 shares, each share is worth $26, with only six shares  (one per party) each one is $62). Does anyone object to this scheme of one share per party?

  2. Sorry, I did not get the minutes completed before Geoff. I'll add here.

I'm doing research on Grand Ronde as backup, will let everyone know results.

Sarah and Sandy will each bring an 8-set of bowls, plates, and untensils for a total of 16. You can bring your own, or paper, and we can figure it out the first night, if need be.

Boats - 3 driftboats (Geoff, Brian, Bryn), 3 Rafts (Jan, Geoff, Bryn), 1 inflatable kayak (Sam)

    Bring your own chair

    Bryn brings backup water filter

Brian and Geoff both bring crappers and we can wrestle for who's gets to go on the trip, the first night.

Bring fun toys, I'll bring a roll of plastic sheeting for a makeshift slip-n-slide, Geoff can bring the lawn darts.

    Bring a small musical instrument

Geoff will learn how to catfish.

I'll post on the sunday night campsite options. Lots of BLM land just west of the river north of put in above wild and scenic, guerrilla camping would probably be fine.
